We are delighted to report that Hauser continues to thrive here at the centre and along with his playmates is as playful, curious, determined and mischievous as ever.

All the cubs have changed so much over the last few months and we can really see their individual personalities develop as they grow into young adolescents. Physically they have also grown and changed a great deal and are now easy to tell apart as their features become more distinguished. Hauser and his sister DiDi still look similar with their slender faces but Hauser is by far the biggest and most outgoing bear within the group with striking markings and a real presence about him. He has grown into an extremely handsome, confident young male with a laid back personality who will do absolutely anything for his favourite food of pumpkin. And he is quite the ladies man but then that’s not surprising given his all female companions!

Moving the cubs to the refurbished bear house and nursery area was very exciting for all of us after all the work we had put into making it a fun and comfortable place for them. A change in environment can be a little unsettling for bears initially but the cubs surprised us all and were completely relaxed about the whole process. They set straight to work exploring their new bear dens, swinging off everything possible, checking out their new super comfy hammocks and of course putting dirty paw prints all over our freshly painted walls and tiles. Fortunately we were prepared for this and took plenty of pictures of our beautifully refurbished bear house prior to our young hooligans arrival knowing full well it would never look quite the same again!

Once the cubs were completely settled in the dens we opened the door to their specially designed outdoor nursery complete with bear pool, twig boxes and lots of other enrichment items. Once again we thought the cubs would be shy initially but after only five minutes all were out having an absolute ball and exploring their new world. Hauser was uncharacteristically reluctant at first and watched to see how the others got on before venturing outside but once out he loved it and it was difficult to get him back in! He is the master forager and loves retrieving tasty treats from twig boxes and ball feeders within the nursery, often spending hours extracting every last piece before settling in one of the hammocks for his afternoon nap.

Hauser now spends his days playing, foraging and relaxing in the warm afternoon sun with not a care in the world but his life could have been so different and we would like to thank you once again for caring enough to help him and also for all your support for projects to protect wildlife in Laos. I hope that you enjoy the attached photos of Hauser and his playmates and we look forward to meeting you soon.

With best regards and bear hugs,
